Contrary to a common assumption, Andorra doesn’t just “tolerate” remote work through some workaround status: the country has a genuine digital nomad visa, governed by a specific law. Here’s what you need to know about its conditions, quota and duration.

The legal basis
Andorra’s digital nomad status is based on Llei 42/2022, of 1 December, on the digital economy, entrepreneurship and innovation. The Govern d’Andorra describes the procedure on its official page “D.3. Residence for digital nomads” and states that permits fall within a quota set by regulation (the Govern’s legislation page cites Decret 11/2023 for this quota regulation).
Main conditions
- Work exclusively remotely, using technological means, with no need for physical presence to carry out the work.
- Work for clients or employers who are not residents of Andorra — this is the key criterion that distinguishes this status from standard active residency.
- Obtain validation from the Ministry of Economy confirming that the activity is genuinely “remote” in nature.
- Have sufficient financial means (the precise regulatory amount could not be confirmed with certainty in our research — check directly with the Andorran authorities or a gestoria when you file your application).
- Have housing that meets Andorran habitability standards.
- Take out health/disability insurance in Andorra and pass the required medical examinations locally.
- Maintain a minimum effective physical presence of 90 days a year in the country.
The quota
The official page says applications must fit within the quota set by regulation, without publishing the figure. A Govern announcement reports the approval of a quota of 100 residence permits for digital nomads and participants in the entrepreneurs programme combined. We do not publish a separate cap for digital nomads alone: we could not confirm one. It is better to apply early and check the quota in force with the Govern or a gestoria.
Duration and renewal
According to the official page, the initial permit is for 2 years, then renewable for 2 years, then 3 years, then 10 years for later renewals (except nationals of states that have signed and ratified an agreement with Andorra). Catalan-language requirements may apply to renewals: check the exact level on govern.ad.

One point to treat with caution
Some sources mention a rule that could revoke the permit if a weekly work-hours cap is exceeded. We were unable to cross-check this against an independent official source at the time of writing, so we prefer not to state it as an established fact. If this matters to you, get confirmation directly from an Andorran gestoria or the Ministry of Economy before basing a decision on it.
Digital nomad or active residency?
