Contrary to a common assumption, Andorra doesn’t just “tolerate” remote work through some workaround status: the country has a genuine digital nomad visa, governed by a specific law. Here’s what you need to know about its conditions, quota and duration.

The legal basis
Andorra’s digital nomad status is based on Llei 42/2022, of 1 December, on the digital economy, entrepreneurship and innovation, supplemented by Decret 212/2023 of 10 May 2023, which came into effect in mid-2023.
Main conditions
- Work exclusively remotely, using technological means, with no need for physical presence to carry out the work.
- Work for clients or employers who are not residents of Andorra — this is the key criterion that distinguishes this status from standard active residency.
- Obtain validation from the Ministry of Economy confirming that the activity is genuinely “remote” in nature.
- Have sufficient financial means (the precise regulatory amount could not be confirmed with certainty in our research — check directly with the Andorran authorities or a gestoria when you file your application).
- Have housing that meets Andorran habitability standards.
- Take out health/disability insurance in Andorra and pass the required medical examinations locally.
- Maintain a minimum effective physical presence of 90 days a year in the country.
The quota: 50 visas a year
The number of digital nomad visas issued each year is capped at 50. If that quota is used up, additional permits under the “entrepreneurship” programme may be issued, up to a combined total of 100 permits a year (digital nomads plus entrepreneurs combined). In practice, this means it’s better to apply early rather than wait until the end of the calendar year.
Duration and renewal
The initial permit is granted for 2 years, then renewable for periods of 2, then 3 years, up to 10 years if conditions continue to be met over time. A language requirement applies progressively: Catalan level A1 required at the first renewal, level A2 at the second (legal basis: Llei 6/2024).
One point to treat with caution
Some sources mention a rule that could revoke the permit if a weekly work-hours cap is exceeded. We were unable to cross-check this against an independent official source at the time of writing, so we prefer not to state it as an established fact. If this matters to you, get confirmation directly from an Andorran gestoria or the Ministry of Economy before basing a decision on it.
Digital nomad or active residency?
The digital nomad visa is designed for people working for foreign clients/employers with no local economic ties.
